Built in the past, for the future: 40 years of implementing the City of Santa Fe’s archaeological and historic district’s code and ordinance – Paul Duran

In 1986, the City of Santa Fe established the archaeological ordinance in support of preserving the past for the future. During that time of inception, public education and preservation were hallmarks for the ordinance. Today, the archaeological ordinance is tied directly to the construction building permit and the development of Santa Fe’s above ground and below surface infrastructure. Given the recent Santa Fe Forward initiative, how do we as archaeologists continue to preserve the past for the future while meeting the present needs today?
This lecture will discuss steps moving forward in the City of Santa Fe where we are implementing updates to the Archaeological and Historic Districts code and ordinance for best preservation practices today and for the future.
